From Wednesday, 7 May 2025, South African motorists will see a slight decrease in fuel prices.
Latest fuel price adjustments announced for May 2025
According to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, both petrol and diesel prices have been adjusted downward following a reduction in global fuel prices.
These changes come despite the rand weakening against the US dollar during the latest review period.
The Department confirmed that the drop in international prices for petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin contributed to lower local prices.
However, the rand’s depreciation—averaging R18.83 to the US dollar compared to R18.30 the previous month—pushed fuel costs up by around 29 to 30 cents per litre.
Despite this, the net impact remained positive for consumers.
Here are the new fuel prices effective 7 May 2025:
Inland:
- Petrol 95: R21.40 per litre (↓ R0.22)
- Petrol 93: R21.29 per litre (↓ R0.22)
- Diesel 0.05%: R20.26 per litre (↓ R0.42)
- Diesel 0.005%: R18.94 per litre (↓ R0.41)
Coastal prices:
- Petrol 95: R20.61 per litre
- Petrol 93: R20.50 per litre
- Diesel 0.05%: R18.27 per litre
- Diesel 0.005%: R18.18 per litre
The Slate Levy remains at 0 cents per litre.
Diesel retail prices are not regulated, meaning actual pump prices may vary between stations. For LPGAS, costs increased due to changes in refinery gate costs, now priced at R14,458.52 per metric ton excluding VAT.
