Police have announced an important development in the case of DJ Sumbody, a well-known South African musician who was killed in 2022.
Major Breakthrough in DJ Sumbody Murder Investigation
DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa Sefoka, died in a shooting while driving in Woodmead, Johannesburg.
The incident also resulted in the death of one of his bodyguards and left another person injured. This week, authorities confirmed that the firearm used in DJ Sumbody’s murder has been connected to at least ten other serious crimes.
According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, the same gun that killed DJ Sumbody was also used in the murder of an engineer named Amand Swart in April 2024.
Police tested several weapons, including an AK-47, and matched them through ballistic tests.
“All those four firearms, including the one AK-47, are linked to at least 10 high-profile cases that include murder and attempted murder,” Mathe explained.
One of the crimes connected to the weapon is the attempted murder of actress Tebogo Thobejane.
Businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is currently on trial for that attack.
Suspects Face Multiple Charges
The four men accused of killing DJ Sumbody recently appeared at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.
Police say the same suspects are also charged with Swart’s murder. They now face charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
Mathe praised the work of the SAPS Political Killings Task Team and the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit for their joint investigation, saying their work had helped solve multiple serious cases.
Political Controversy Around Arrest of Molefe
The case has also led to political fallout. A businessman named Katiso “KT” Molefe was arrested on Monday for his alleged role in DJ Sumbody’s murder.
Reports say Kenny Kunene, a local government official in Johannesburg, was at Molefe’s home when police arrested him.
Kunene, who is part of the Patriotic Alliance political party, said he was there to help a journalist get an interview with Molefe.
“It was basically to give the man the opportunity to speak about where he stands,” he told eNCA.
However, the Democratic Alliance (DA), an opposition political party, has demanded that Kunene resign from his position as Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport. ,
“The DA calls for Kunene’s immediate resignation… The office of the executive mayor must be beyond reproach,” DA Johannesburg leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku said.
DJ Sumbody was well-known for his music and influence in the South African entertainment scene.
His death in November 2022 shocked fans and raised concerns about violent crime involving public figures.
While police have not revealed the motive behind his murder, they say their investigation is continuing and more developments are expected.
