Winners of the PSL Awards for the 2024/25 season have been announced.

The PSL Awards honour the best performers in South African club football, and the winners for the 2024/25 season have now been officially announced.

A highlight of the awards was the Chairman’s Award, handed to Mamelodi Sundowns in recognition of their dominant eighth successive Premiership title and their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.

This award is given by the PSL chairman, Dr Irvin Khoza, to recognise exceptional club achievements beyond playing performance, including off‑field success.

In his speech, Khoza specifically praised Sundowns’ continued excellence and international showings.

Here are the major award recipients for this past season:

  • Goalkeeper of the Season (Betway Premiership): Sipho Chaine (Orlando Pirates)
  • Referee of the Season: Masixole Bambiso
  • Assistant Referee of the Season: Kgara Mokoena
  • Championship Players’ Player of the Season: Muzomuhle Khanyi (Hungry Lions → Stellenbosch FC)
  • Championship Young Player of the Season: Teboho Lakhatla (Casric Stars)
  • Championship Goalkeeper of the Season: Dumisani Msibi (Durban City)
  • DStv Diski Challenge Player of the Season: Tylon Smith (Stellenbosch FC → QPR)
  • Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament: Pule Mmodi (Kaizer Chiefs)
  • Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player: Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Orlando Pirates)

New PSL season set to start in early August

To add context beyond the awards, the new 2025/26 PSL season launch dates are now public, allowing fans and clubs to plan ahead.

  • MTN8 quarter‑finals kick off on Friday, 1 August 2025. This tournament opens the season and features the top eight teams from the previous league table. Orlando Pirates will again chase the MTN8 title.
  • The Betway Premiership (top division) begins a week later. Fixtures are yet to be released, but defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns will aim to secure a ninth consecutive league crown.
  • The Motsepe Foundation Championship (second tier) starts 22 August 2025, with clubs across the country vying for promotion to the top division.
  • The DStv Diski Challenge, South Africa’s under‑23 development league, restarts on 6 September 2025, with Kaizer Chiefs looking to repeat their previous success.

For new and casual football watchers:

  • The MTN8 is a mini‑tournament among the top eight finishing teams from last season.
  • The Betway Premiership is the main league competition where clubs play each other twice in a season league format.
  • The Championship is one level below the Premiership; the winner earns promotion to the top flight.
