Authorities in the North West have confirmed that a lion which escaped from a transport trailer on Monday morning has been safely captured. The incident, which took place along the R49 road between Lichtenburg and Zeerust, went viral on social media after motorists shared videos showing the animal leaping off the back of a moving truck.

According to Jacaranda FM, the lion was being transported from the Free State to Nietverdiend in the Ramotshere Moiloa area when it broke free from its cage.

In the footage, the adult male lion can be seen standing atop a moving vehicle before jumping onto the road.

The Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) confirmed that inspectors and law enforcement officers responded immediately to the scene.

DEDECT spokesperson Jeremiah Matebesi said there was no longer any danger to residents or road users.

“We can confirm that the lion has been recaptured and poses no threat to the community. Our inspectors and local law enforcement acted swiftly to contain the situation,” Matebesi said.

However, the department has since launched a formal investigation to determine whether the transporter complied with wildlife transport permit conditions.

“Preliminary findings suggest there may have been an infringement of the transport permit conditions. We will assess full compliance with national standards that regulate the movement and welfare of carnivores,” Matebesi added.

Authorities are reviewing adherence to the South African National Standards (SANS 1884-3), which outline requirements for vehicle safety, cage construction, and animal handling procedures during transport.

Condition 5 of the permit also requires the transporter to maintain public liability insurance and take full responsibility for any harm caused by escaped wildlife.

“If we find negligence or non-compliance, severe action will be taken against the permit holder,” Matebesi warned.

Videos of the lion’s escape quickly spread online, drawing millions of views and sparking widespread concern about animal safety and regulatory oversight. One video, shared by journalist Izak du Plessis, showed the lion clumsily landing on the tar before walking along a nearby fence.

The animal did not appear to be injured.

Officials have since reminded game farmers and wildlife transporters to ensure that proper safety checks and legal permits are in place before moving dangerous animals.

“This incident is a reminder of the serious responsibility that comes with wildlife transport. Safety, compliance, and animal welfare must come first at all times,” Matebesi said.

The North West lion has since been returned to its owner, and authorities say further updates will be provided once the investigation is concluded.
