Swedish striker Alexander Isak has publicly questioned his future at Newcastle United after releasing a strongly worded message on social media.

Alexander Isak issues statement on future

The 25-year-old forward, who was recently the subject of a £110 million transfer bid from Liverpool, posted his statement on Tuesday evening at 21:00 UK time (22:00 SAST), during the 2025 PFA Awards.

In his message, Isak thanked his teammates and acknowledged his inclusion in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season. However, he explained that he did not attend the ceremony because of ongoing tensions with Newcastle.

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interest of everyone, not just myself,” Isak wrote.

Isak’s main concern, according to his statement, is that agreements made behind closed doors with the club were not honoured.

He suggested that the club misled supporters by acting as if his desire to leave was a new development, when in reality, he claims Newcastle had long been aware of his position.

The forward, who joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022, has become a key figure in the team, scoring important goals in both domestic and European competitions.

His rising profile has attracted interest from top clubs, with Liverpool already tabling a record-breaking offer earlier this month.

Newcastle United’s official response

Shortly after Isak’s post, Newcastle United released a formal statement addressing the situation. The club expressed disappointment at learning about the matter through social media, but clarified its position.

“We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening. We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer,” the club said.

The statement added that while the club values Isak, any transfer decision must be made in Newcastle’s best interest.

“We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views… We must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met.”

Newcastle also emphasised its identity as a “family club” and said Isak remains part of that family and would be welcomed back when ready to rejoin his teammates.

With the transfer window closing on 1 September, speculation around Alexander Isak is likely to intensify. Liverpool are expected to return with an improved offer, though Newcastle’s firm stance suggests negotiations could become drawn out.

For now, the situation remains uncertain. Isak has made it clear he wants to leave, but Newcastle insists he is under contract and will not be sold unless their own conditions are met.
