Marianhill fatal crash: Details of the driver emerge

As reported by EastCoast Radio, a total of 15 vehicles were involved in the multi-pile-up collision. According to Medi Response spokesperson Paul Herbst, road closures were put in place to extricate the bodies of four victims who were trapped inside a vehicle that was crushed by a truck.

“Search and rescue teams are currently extricating four people that have succumbed to their injuries in one of the vehicles. An additional three people have sustained moderate to serious injuries. The road currently is closed for any motorists coming down from the Mariannhill side,” Herbst noted at the time.

From what we understand, at least three other victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of what’s said to be serious injuries. Updates on the condition of the survivors were not available at the time this article was published.

According to the Road Traffic Inspectorate, early indications suggest the truck that caused the Marianhill fatal crash experienced a brake failure moments before ramming into traffic.

While local authorities had not issued a formal statement with more information on the crash, video footage of the aftermath surfaced on social media, where the alleged truck driver responsible for the fatal Marianhill crash was questioned by fellow truckers.

In the video clip, first shared by PSAFLIVE, a group of angry men was heard questioning the driver, who identified himself as a Zimbabwean national.

The man, afraid to get out of the truck, could not produce a permit or a valid driver’s licence, lending further credence to speculation that he may have entered the country illegally but somehow managed to obtain employment in the freight industry.
