A tragic incident has unfolded at Gondwana game reserve near Mossel Bay, where 39-year-old FC Conradie, the CEO and co-owner of the reserve, was trampled to death by an elephant on Tuesday, 22 July 2025.

Elephant attack claims life of Gondwana game reserve CEO

Gondwana game reserve is a well-known private wildlife sanctuary in the Western Cape that offers safaris and is home to the “Big Five” – lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo.

According to Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp from the KwaNonqaba Police Station, the event happened around 08:00 during what was expected to be a routine day at the reserve.

Witnesses said Conradie was on the property when the elephant suddenly charged at him. Emergency medical teams arrived at the scene shortly afterward, but he was declared dead on arrival.

Kapp confirmed that the elephant involved in the incident has been removed from the area as a safety precaution. Police have launched a formal investigation to better understand what led to the fatal attack.

Although elephants are generally not aggressive, conservation experts explain that they can become dangerous when they are stressed, feel threatened, or react to sudden movements.

This kind of behaviour, while rare, can result in serious harm or death, even to experienced handlers or conservationists.

Loved ones and conservationists in mourning

A spokesperson for the reserve, speaking to IOL News on behalf of the family and choosing to remain anonymous, described Conradie’s death as devastating.

“We ask that people respect the privacy of the family while they are grieving such a tragic loss,” he said.

“This was a tragedy, and everyone who knew him is dealing with an unimaginable loss.”

Tributes have flooded social media platforms, with many in the South African conservation community expressing shock and sadness.

Gondwana game reserve has built a reputation for its conservation programs and eco-tourism.

It has not yet been confirmed whether Conradie was following specific safety protocols at the time of the incident. Further details may emerge as the police and reserve conduct their investigation.
