France’s FIFA World Cup winner and Manchester City’s three-time Premier League-winning defender Benjamin Mendy has been denied bail by the Chester Magistrates’ Court, and now, he will have to remain in custody until the start of his multiple rape trial.
Benjamin Mendy faces four counts of rape, sexual assault
After making it into the line-up on the 2021/22 Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City released a statement confirming that the 27-year-old has been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation into the criminal charges.
“The matter is subject to a legal process and the Club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete,” the blue Manchurians noted.
The Frenchman is currently being held at HM Prison Altcourse in Liverpool, a Category A/B men’s and young offender Institution in the Fazakerley area of Merseyside.
According to court documents, at least four women have come forward accusing the Man City defender of rape and sexual assault. From what we understand, these incidents allegedly took place at parties held at his Prestbury home between October 2020 and August 2021.
Moreover, it’s believed a second assailant, a male suspect aged 40, faces similar charges. However, unlike the Frenchman, the unidentified suspect has been released on bail.
Mendy is expected back in court on Friday 10 September 2021.
The girls he allegedly assaulted
To protect the victims’ identities, no images have been released. However, from what we understand, all three of the women accusing the left-back are aged above 16.
The most recent victim, State prosecutor Debbie Byrne told the court, is aged 17. This means that Mendy will not be facing any statutory charges since in the United Kingdom, the age of consent is 16.
Last week Friday, prosecutor Byrne informed Chester magistrates court of the different occasions these women were allegedly raped by the star footballer.
According to the State, the first victim was allegedly raped at least three times after she was invited to a party held at the Frenchman’s home in October 2020.
The second victim, it’s believed, was allegedly sexually assaulted by the 27-year-old at a similar gathering in January 2021.
The third victim, a 17-year-old female, was allegedly raped under similar circumstances in August.
Thus far, Mendy has not entered a plea in the multiple rape case. The footballer is expected to inform the court of his plea when he reappears next week Friday.
