More than 26 million eligible South Africans will head to the polls to cast their vote in the 2021 municipal elections and the general consensus on social media is that the time is up for the African National Congress (ANC).

Legacy issues have plagued the ruling party’s popularity over the years. Rampant corruption orchestrated by a syndicate of elected public servants has destabilised state-owned enterprises.

On Election Day, the only time in a period of four years where ordinary South Africans have an influence in electing the leadership of their choosing, the sentiment around social media was clear.

Author of The New Apartheid Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh reminded South Africans of the ruling party’s failed 27-year promise of greener pastures.

Sportscaster Robert Marawa quoted former president Thabo Mbeki’s sentiments when he cast his ballot on Election Day, where he categorically stated that “we need honest people not thieves [in government].”
