Sony has announced that the latest PS5 system software update will begin rolling out worldwide from Wednesday, 17 September 2025.
Global rollout starts tomorrow
Players everywhere will be able to update their consoles by going to:
Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
This update introduces major features designed to make gaming more flexible and environmentally friendly.
Multi-device controller pairing
Until now, if you wanted to use your DualSense controller on another device (like a PC, Mac, or smartphone), you had to re-pair it each time. With the new update, this will no longer be necessary.
- You can now pair your controller with up to four devices at once.
- Switching is as simple as pressing the PS button together with one of the action buttons (triangle, circle, cross, or square).
- Each button corresponds to a slot number, so you’ll know which device you’re connected to by the lights on your controller.
For example:
- Slot 1 = PS5
- Slot 2 = PS5 Pro
- Slot 3 = PC
- Slot 4 = iPhone
This makes it much easier for players who game across multiple platforms.
Introducing Power Saver mode
Another big addition is the Power Saver option, found under:
Settings > System > Power Saving > Use Power Saver.
When enabled, this setting allows supported PS5 games to run with lower power consumption, which helps save energy and reduce environmental impact.
Sony says this is part of its “Road to Zero” plan, aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
Future updates for popular games like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Demon’s Souls, and iwill support this feature, with more titles expected to follow.
Sony has been pushing for more flexibility in how players use their controllers and consoles.
By allowing multi-device pairing, it gives users freedom to move between platforms without hassle.
Meanwhile, Power Saver mode reflects a growing trend of gaming companies focusing on sustainability.
Fans have already praised these changes online, especially the controller update, which many say will make cross-platform play smoother than ever.
How to prepare for the update
- Make sure your PS5 is connected to the internet.
- Check your storage space to ensure the update can download.
- Restart your console after installation to apply all changes.
Sony also recommends disconnecting USB cables from controllers before pairing them wirelessly.
