OpenAI launches GPT-5, it’s most advanced generative model yet

OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, its most advanced AI model to date, replacing all previous versions with new features that aim to improve accuracy, safety, and usability.

OpenAI GPT-5

OpenAI has launched GPT-5, its latest and most advanced generative AI model, across all ChatGPT plans.

A new era for generative AI

The upgrade is available to users globally through the web, desktop, and mobile apps.

The release marks the start of a new phase in artificial intelligence and will eventually replace older models such as GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, and GPT-3.5.

According to OpenAI’s latest release notes, GPT-5 is being introduced to all logged-in users, whether on free or paid plans.

Those using ChatGPT Pro or Team can choose advanced versions such as GPT-5 Thinking and GPT-5 Thinking Pro, which offer higher accuracy for complex tasks.

What makes GPT-5 different?

GPT-5 is designed to be smarter and more reliable than previous models. It performs better in complex fields like mathematics, science, finance, and law. OpenAI describes it as having the intelligence of a group of experts available anytime you need help.

The new model is also less likely to give incorrect or made-up answers—a problem known in AI as “hallucination.” It is built to understand and respond more clearly, helping with everything from research to coding and writing.

For users interested in health information, GPT-5 offers more precise and safe responses, making it a more trusted digital assistant for common medical questions.

New features and customisation

With GPT-5, users can personalise their experience in more ways.

ChatGPT now allows users to:

  • Choose between four different personalities: Cynic, Robot, Listener, or Nerd.
  • Set custom accent colours for chat bubbles and other interface elements.
  • Use improved Voice Mode, which adjusts how the AI speaks—changing tone, speed, and length to match user preferences.

GPT-5 is also integrated with services like Gmail and Google Calendar, allowing it to offer more personalised assistance by analysing your email or schedule—if you give permission.

The end of older GPT models

As GPT-5 rolls out, older models are being phased out.

Conversations that used GPT-4.5, GPT-4o, or earlier versions will automatically switch to GPT-5. For users who previously relied on these versions, ChatGPT will match them with the closest equivalent in the new lineup.

Voice Mode will still use GPT-4o for now but will be updated to the latest voice experience soon.

Standard Voice Mode will be discontinued in 30 days.

The journey to GPT-5

OpenAI’s evolution began in 2018 with GPT-1 and has progressed through multiple versions, each improving on language understanding and user interaction.

GPT-5 now brings these developments together in a single, unified system that combines power, safety, and personalization.

With its ability to handle detailed questions, offer accurate insights, and adapt to user needs, GPT-5 is positioned as OpenAI’s most versatile model yet—built to serve a wide range of individual and professional uses.
