Amazon has a ‘key’ to thousands of apartments in the US – what we know

Amazon reportedly wants a 'key' to your business or garage of your home for easy delivery. Here's what we know.

Amazon Key

Amazon is pushing for businesses and landlords to start using Amazon Key, to reduce the risk of theft and stolen goods, in which drivers will simply enter your apartment without needing any assistance, by using a one-time access pin.

Amazon Key: the driver will enter your apartment without needing your assistance

Amazon introduced Key in 2018, however, there were concerns over security and safety but the giant company assured its customers that they run comprehensive background checks on Amazon drivers before their first delivery, and for even more reassurance, they confirm the authorised driver is at your address with the correct package before granting them temporary one-time access to open your garage door, and you receive real-time notifications about what is happening during your delivery.

“Our residents order a high volume of packages from Amazon, requiring frequent access by delivery drivers to our communities. To help ensure packages aren’t delayed in reaching our residents, we’ve enabled the Key for Business technology at key doors and gates. This reduces work for our associates and provides a more secure digital verification of driver activity,” says Karen Hollinger, Vice President of Corporate Initiatives.

How will Amazon ensure safety?

Drivers will receive a one-time access pin, after that they cannot use the pin again. Once the driver is in your home, they cannot go more than five feet inside your garage.

If you want to go even an extra mile to make sure nothing shady happens during the delivery, you can watch the deliveries using a compatible camera that is sold separately, according to Amazon. You will also receive notifications during the whole process.
