In a statement accompanying the reveal, Rockstar acknowledged the long wait and thanked fans for their patience.

“We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game,” the company wrote, adding that the extra time is needed to ensure the game meets high expectations.

This update marks the end of years of speculation and anticipation following the overwhelming success of GTA V, which first launched in 2013 and has since sold more than 200 million copies worldwide.

What to expect from the title

The trailer introduces fans to the story of Jason and Lucia, two characters who seem to embody the chaotic spirit of past GTA leads. According to Rockstar’s description, the pair are caught up in a botched heist that propels them into a massive conspiracy across Leonida, a fictional state inspired by Florida.

“The deck is stacked against them,” Rockstar notes, “but they must rely on each other if they want to survive.”

This storyline suggests players will be switching between characters, much like the dual protagonists system seen in GTA V, though the emotional stakes here appear more intense.

The game promises the usual mix of crime, fast cars, and satirical storytelling, with the trailer showcasing expansive cityscapes, bustling beaches, and neon-lit streets.

Scenes of high-speed chases, heists, and late-night clubbing suggest the next instalment will continue to push the open-world experience further with richer detail and deeper character arcs.

When is ‘GTA 6’ release date?

The official release date for GTA 6 is 26 May 2026. While this comes later than many fans expected, Rockstar emphasised that the delay is in service of delivering a game that exceeds expectations.

“We hope you understand that we need this extra time,” Rockstar’s statement reads.

“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception.”

More information about gameplay, platforms, and pre-order availability is expected in the coming months.
