The Battlefield 6 franchise has returned to its former glory this month with the release of the latest entry in the long-running military shooter series.
The game’s first season of post-launch content begins this week and includes a major update, along with a new free-to-play battle royale mode called Redsec.
According to CNET, Update 1.1.1.0 for Battlefield 6 will begin rolling out on Tuesday, 28 October 2025.
The update is scheduled to go live at 11:00 Eastern Time (17:00 SAST), with Redsec launching on the same day. The announcement was made via the official Battlefield social media channels on Monday.
Redsec marks the series’ second attempt at a battle royale format after the Firestorm mode introduced in Battlefield V in 2019.
While Firestorm failed to capture lasting attention, developers at Battlefield Studios say Redsec has been redesigned from the ground up to deliver faster, more tactical gameplay suited to modern audiences.
The mode will take place on an entirely new map built for large-scale combat and destruction — two of the series’ defining features. In Redsec, up to 100 players will drop into the battlefield in four-person squads, scavenging for weapons and equipment while a deadly shrinking zone forces combatants closer together.
Players will earn experience points (XP) by eliminating enemies and completing objectives, which can be used to unlock traits and improve their soldier’s abilities throughout the match.
As with the main game, players can choose from various classes before a match — such as assault, engineer, or recon — but cannot change them mid-game.
Developers confirmed that players will also be able to use light vehicles during combat, with the potential to unlock heavier armored vehicles as the match progresses.
Environmental destruction will continue to be a key part of the gameplay, allowing players to demolish walls and buildings to gain tactical advantages.
The Redsec launch coincides with Battlefield 6’s first major seasonal update.
The patch brings refined animations, improved weapon accuracy, visual upgrades, and several map adjustments aimed at smoothing gameplay and balancing performance across platforms.
A detailed list of these changes was published by the game’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, where developers described Season 1 as “a new beginning for Battlefield.”
While Redsec will be available as a standalone free-to-play experience, those who own Battlefield 6 on PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X/S will receive exclusive in-game rewards and battle pass progression tied to the main game.
The decision to introduce a free-to-play mode reflects a growing trend among multiplayer shooters to expand player bases through accessible content.
Developers say the aim is to bring new players into the Battlefield universe while giving veterans a new way to experience the game’s large-scale combat.
Fans can expect ongoing updates to Redsec throughout the season, including limited-time events, new weapons, and map variations.
With its first major expansion now underway, Battlefield 6 appears to be regaining the momentum that once made the franchise a cornerstone of multiplayer gaming.
