Plans for the funeral and memorial services of former Springbok rugby player Cornal Hendricks have been confirmed.
Details about Cornal Hendricks funeral confirmed
Hendricks, who passed away last Wednesday at the age of 37, will be buried this Sunday in his hometown of Wellington, in the Boland region of the Western Cape.
Cornal Hendricks died from a heart attack. A heart attack is a medical emergency that happens when blood flow to the heart is blocked, usually by a clot. If the blood flow is not quickly restored, parts of the heart muscle can stop working.
Hendricks had been living with a heart condition since 2015, which affected his rugby career, at times preventing him from joining or playing for certain teams.
His funeral will take place on Sunday, 25 May 2025, at 12:00 at the NG Kerk Moedergemeente.
This church is located on Main Road in Wellington. The service is expected to be attended by family, friends, former teammates, and fans who want to pay their last respects to the former rugby star.
Before the funeral, two memorial services will be held to honour his life. The first memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, 22 May at 12:00 pm at the Boland Rugby Stadium in Wellington.
The stadium, located on Fontein Street, is where Hendricks once played during his rugby career.
The second memorial service will take place on Friday, 23 May at 18:00 at CRC Paarl, a church located on Jan Van Riebeeck Drive in the Denneburg area of Paarl.
This service will offer another opportunity for the public and members of the community to come together in remembrance of Hendricks.
All services are open to the public, and those who wish to attend are encouraged to arrive early. The family and organisers are preparing for a large turnout as the community prepares to say goodbye to one of its sporting heroes.
Cornal Hendricks made his debut for the South African national rugby team, the Springboks, in 2014. He played in 12 international matches and scored five tries during his time representing the country.
He was well known for his speed on the field and for being a dedicated and passionate player.
