If it was not for the current Alert Level 3 restrictions which limit attendance at funerals, then Mpura’s farewell would have been a crowded affair.

Alas, the Protea South Hall in Soweto, Johannesburg, was filled to capacity with family and close friends of the late musician, on a sombre day where after a week since the tragic car accident that took six lives, he was escorted to his final resting place.

Mzwakhe ‘Robot Boii’ Mbuli, a close friend of Mpura, managed the direction of the programme and a bespoke list of celebrities took turns with the family in sharing fond memories of Mpura.

Perhaps, the most tear-jerking moment came when Lady Du approached the mic stand to detail how Mpura impacted her life which, since the release of the smash hit Umsebenzi Wethu, has been on the upswing.

“Mpura is one person who gave me an opportunity to work in the studio. At that time, I wasn’t in a good space. I told Mpura I can’t sing … And Mpura said to me: ‘Whatever you are feeling, you should feel through it in the song.”

The songstress assured the musician’s family that despite the untimely loss, Mpura’s legacy will live on in his music.

“He is going to still be alive in music,” she said”

Here are some of the highlights we picked out from the funeral that was streamed live on social media:
