The arrival of Walmart in South Africa is now official.
Walmart confirms South Africa expansion
The US retail giant announced that it will open its first branded stores in the country in 2025, marking a major step in its African expansion. Walmart already owns Massmart, which operates stores like Game and Makro, but this will be the first time customers shop directly at a Walmart-branded store.
In its statement, Walmart said the decision is part of its commitment to making affordable, high-quality products available to more South Africans.
Kath McLay, Walmart International’s president and CEO, explained that the new South African stores will stock a wide variety of items, from fresh groceries and household essentials to clothes, electronics, and global brands.
Importantly, the stores will also carry locally sourced products, including goods from small and medium-sized suppliers. These suppliers were connected to Walmart through its first Growth Summit in South Africa earlier this year.
“By partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, Walmart will bring its signature Every Day Low Prices and global standards to the market, while celebrating the country’s rich culture,” McLay said.
Store design and shopping experience
The stores are expected to feature Walmart’s familiar style: wide aisles, bright layouts, and family-friendly service.
The company said customers will benefit from both affordability and modern shopping technology, such as digital tools to improve convenience.
Massmart CEO Miles van Rensburg said the company was excited to introduce Walmart’s brand directly to South African communities.
Van Rensburg added that low pricing and helpful service will be central to the stores, from a warm welcome at the entrance to efficient checkout counters.
“By listening and working together, we aim to build lasting relationships and deliver a delightful shopping experience that reflects the needs and aspirations of South Africans,” he said.
When and where will Walmart stores open?
Walmart said its first stores are already under development, with exact opening dates to be revealed in October 2025.
The company has not yet confirmed locations but promised updates on store sites, hiring, and community programmes in the coming months.
In addition to selling goods, Walmart said it will invest in local jobs, training, sustainability, and outreach initiatives to support South African communities.
Walmart is the world’s biggest retailer, with thousands of stores across the United States, Latin America, Asia, and beyond.
Its entry into South Africa with its own brand stores is expected to increase competition in the local retail market, giving consumers more options for affordable shopping.
