The City of Tshwane has issued a warning about possible illegal and violent protests in Pretoria West, scheduled for the early morning of Monday, 20 May 2024.
MMC for Community Safety Grandi Theunissen warned in a statement that these protests are expected to take place in the Booysens Hercules area.
Protesters have reportedly threatened to create barricades, burn tyres, use petrol bombs, throw stones and bricks, and damage electricity connections in the Hercules area.
They have also threatened to attack businesses and the Hercules Police Station.
In response to these threats, the City of Tshwane has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order.
The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) has been instructed to take strong action against any criminal behaviour.
Residents and commuters are urged to exercise caution and avoid the areas likely to be affected by the protests.

The potential for violence and roadblocks during the protest means that several key roads in Pretoria West could be hazardous.
The following roads and areas have been identified as high-risk and should be avoided:
- Booysens Area (North of Van der Hoff Road towards Witwatersberg Mountain): This area is expected to be a focal point of the protests, with protesters likely to set up barricades and engage in disruptive activities.
- Bremer Street: Another hotspot where significant protest activity is anticipated.
- Attie Street: Residents and commuters should avoid this street due to expected disruptions and possible violence.
- Hjalmer Street: This street is also on the list of areas to steer clear of during the protest.
- Theo Slabbert Street: A key road where protesters might gather and cause disturbances.
- Richardsbay Road: Expected to be another focal point for the protests.
- Daspoort Tunnel: A crucial tunnel that could be blocked or used by protesters to create significant traffic disruptions.
- Van der Hoff Road: This major road is likely to see substantial protest activity and should be avoided if possible.

The protests may also spill over into neighbouring areas, including Fortsig Tshwane Electrical Depot, Suiderberg, Mountain View, Hercules, Claremont, Booysens, Kirkney, and Lotus Gardens.
