A truck transporting four elephants from Addo Elephant National Park (AENP) to Samara Karoo Reserve overturned on Olifantskop Pass between Paterson and Cookhouse in the Eastern Cape this afternoon.

Latest updates on the condition of the elephants

Authorities confirmed that the elephants were unharmed, and a SANParks veterinarian is on-site monitoring their condition.

Despite the dramatic accident, no injuries were reported to either the elephants or the vehicle occupants.

The cause of the accident is believed to be a shift in the animals’ weight, which may have destabilised the truck.

The road, when this article was published, remained blocked as recovery operations were still underway.

It’s believed at least two recovery vehicles arrived to assist in reloading the elephants onto another transport vehicle so they could continue their journey to Samara Karoo Reserve.

The elephants were being relocated as a donation from AENP to Samara, a private game reserve near Graaff-Reinet.

NSPCA reacts to Olifantskop Pass incident

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) issued a statement expressing concern over the welfare of the elephants, particularly as they remain trapped in the truck under 31°C heat.

“The NSPCA is aware of the incident involving a truck transporting four elephants that overturned on Olifantskop Pass in the Eastern Cape. The Grahamstown SPCA is on-site ensuring the welfare of the animals,” the statement read.

While initial reports confirm that the elephants have not sustained visible injuries, the NSPCA has raised questions about why elephants—termed “assets” by the government—were donated to a private game reserve.

The organisation noted ongoing concerns about elephants in private reserves, especially those that offer hunting opportunities.

The NSPCA commended the Grahamstown SPCA for assisting beyond its jurisdiction to ensure the elephants’ well-being.
