The tornado, which formed inland, brought hail and severe winds that damaged homes, uprooted trees, and disrupted power lines.

The dramatic event was caught on camera by residents and quickly went viral on social media.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had issued a level 1 weather warning earlier in the day, but the tornado’s sudden appearance caught many off guard.

Eyewitness reports indicate that the tornado moved swiftly through residential areas, toppling structures and causing significant damage.

Emergency services were dispatched to the affected areas to assist with rescue operations and assess the damage.

Local authorities have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid travelling unless necessary.

The SAWS continues to monitor the situation closely and has warned of potential follow-up storms in the coming days.

The eThekwini Municipality, in a statement issued on Tuesday morning, confirmed that the storm has, thus far, claimed five lives, with many more injured and displaced.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution, as the roads may be slippery and visibility could be reduced due to the rain.
