Weather warnings issued for Wednesday, 2 July 2025

While most provinces will experience mild winter conditions, a Yellow Level 1 warning for damaging winds has been issued for the western interior of the Northern Cape.

According to the South African Weather Service, these winds may result in localised damage to infrastructure in both formal and informal settlements and increase the risk of runaway fires.

This alert level signifies a low probability of minor impacts, but precautions are recommended. Residents in areas such as Upington and surrounding parts of the Northern Cape are advised to secure loose structures and be vigilant against potential fires driven by gusty winds.

No fire danger warnings have been declared for Wednesday, and there are no broad advisories in effect, though significant weather shifts are forecast later in the week.

The SAWS notes that very cold, wet, and windy conditions are anticipated to develop from Thursday onwards, impacting the Western and Northern Cape, as well as parts of the interior.

  • Yellow Level 1 Warning for Damaging Winds: Expected over the western interior of the Northern Cape, with risks of localised structural damage and runaway fires.
  • No fire danger warnings have been issued.
  • No additional advisories are currently in place, though a front is expected to bring worsening conditions from Thursday.

In the broader outlook, cities across the Highveld such as Johannesburg (6°C/18°C), Pretoria (6°C/20°C), and Bloemfontein (0°C/19°C) will see fine morning weather becoming partly cloudy later in the day.

Northern cities like Mahikeng and Vryburg will experience windy spells alongside temperatures peaking around 20°C–22°C.

Coastal regions show a more varied pattern. Cape Town faces cloudy skies with rain and a cooler maximum of 17°C. The Garden Route, including George, may see isolated thundershowers by evening. Durban and East London will enjoy dry conditions with maximum temperatures reaching into the mid-20s.

Seasonally, South Africa continues to reflect expected mid-winter conditions. The Seasonal Climate Watch forecasts above-normal minimum and maximum temperatures across most regions, except along the southern coast where cooler-than-average conditions persist. Above-normal rainfall for mid-winter is still anticipated in the southwestern and eastern coastal belts, offering relief for agriculture and water-sensitive regions
