South Africa is set to experience a diverse range of weather conditions on Thursday, with severe thunderstorms expected in some regions alongside extremely high fire danger conditions in others.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), a Yellow Level 2 warning is in effect for severe thunderstorms accompanied by strong damaging winds, hail, and heavy downpours.

These conditions pose a risk of localised damage to infrastructure, settlements, property, vehicles, livelihoods, and livestock in the Free State, western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, southern parts of Gauteng and Mpumalanga, as well as northern areas of the Eastern Cape.

Fire Danger Warnings

The northern and central parts of the Northern Cape, along with central areas of the Western Cape, are on alert for extremely high fire danger conditions.

Advisories

Uncomfortably hot conditions are forecasted for areas in the Central and Little Karoo.

Eastern Cape

In the east, the region will be cloudy and warm to hot with scattered showers and thundershowers, though more isolated along the coast and adjacent interior. Coastal areas will face fresh to strong north-easterly winds.

In the west, the weather will be partly cloudy and hot to very hot with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north and east, but warmer along the coast. Coastal winds will be moderate to fresh north-easterly, strengthening east of Algoa Bay in the afternoon.

Free State

Partly cloudy conditions are anticipated, with warm to hot temperatures but cooler in eastern areas. The region will experience scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers, though less so in the extreme west.

Gauteng

The province can expect partly cloudy skies with warm temperatures. Isolated showers and thundershowers are predicted, becoming more scattered in the cooler southern regions. The UVB sunburn index will be very high.

KwaZulu-Natal

Morning fog is possible in interior areas, followed by cloudy to partly cloudy and cool to warm weather. Scattered showers and thundershowers are anticipated. Coastal areas will experience moderate to fresh north-easterly winds. The UVB sunburn index is low.

Limpopo

Morning fog and drizzle are expected along the escarpment. The rest of the province will see cloudy conditions with warm to hot temperatures and isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the extreme northwest.

Mpumalanga

The weather will be cloudy and cool to warm, though hotter conditions are forecasted for the Lowveld. Scattered showers and thundershowers are on the cards.

North West

The day will be partly cloudy with temperatures ranging from hot to very hot. Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected, except in the extreme west.

Northern Cape

Morning fog patches will be seen along the coast, followed by fine, windy, and hot to very hot weather. However, the extreme east may see partly cloudy skies with isolated showers and thundershowers. Coastal areas will experience light to moderate south-westerly winds.

Western Cape

Expect morning fog patches along the south coast and adjacent interior. The day will be fine and warm to hot, becoming extremely hot over the Karoo. The west coast and northeastern parts might see partly cloudy conditions. Coastal areas will face fresh to strong easterly to south-westerly winds. The UVB sunburn index is extreme.
