Factors impacting fuel prices in August 2025

The fuel price adjustments for August 2025 were influenced by two main factors:

1. Changes in international oil prices

The average international price of petrol dropped during the review period, which is why petrol is now cheaper.

On the other hand, the prices of diesel and illuminating paraffin increased in the global market. This pushed up the local prices for these two fuel types.

2. Exchange rate between the Rand and the US Dollar

South Africa buys fuel using US dollars. During the review period (27 June to 31 July 2025), the rand became slightly stronger, with the average exchange rate improving from R17.84/USD to R17.77/USD.

A stronger rand means it costs less to buy fuel from other countries, which helps to reduce local fuel prices.

However, this small improvement was not enough to cancel out the rise in international diesel and paraffin prices.

Other important points

  • The R0.16 per litre fuel levy, introduced in June 2025, still applies and remains included in the final fuel price.
  • The Slate Levy, which helps the government recover money if it overpays or under-recovers on fuel sales, remains unchanged at zero cents per litre.
