Factors impacting fuel prices in September 2025

Several international and local factors influenced these price cuts:

  1. Lower global oil prices: The average international product prices for petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin dropped during the review period (1–28 August 2025). This lowered the cost of importing refined fuel into South Africa.
  2. Stronger rand: The rand strengthened slightly against the US dollar, averaging R17.73/$ compared to R17.77/$ in the previous period. A stronger currency reduces the amount paid in rands for oil priced in dollars .
  3. No slate levy applied: The Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism, used when there’s a large imbalance in recovery costs, remains at 0 cents per litre. This means no extra charge was added to correct past under-recoveries.

The department confirmed that the Single Maximum National Retail Price for illuminating paraffin will be R16.63 per litre, down from R17.12 per litre last month
