Video footage from the scene shows groups of Ennerdale residents taking to the streets, effectively closing off major roadways, including the main entrance to Ennerdale at James Street.
Protesters have used various objects to barricade the roads, preventing the normal flow of traffic and demanding immediate action from local authorities.
When this article was published, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and SAPS were called to the scene to manage the situation and ensure safety.
Report: Protests led by alleged land invaders
The protests are reportedly led by a group of approximately 400 individuals from the nearby community of Finetown, identified as land invaders.
These individuals have been clearing areas and marking sites for illegal settlement, prompting a severe backlash from established Ennerdale residents.
Local law enforcement, including Community Sergeant Ramushu, engaged with the protesters to communicate the illegality of their actions but noted that the group was not violent at the time of engagement.
Representatives of the protesting group, who chose to remain anonymous, cited escalating crime—including assaults on women—and an acute need for land and housing as their main motivations for the invasion.
Despite these claims, their actions have led to significant disruption and heightened tensions in the community.
Law enforcement continues to monitor the situation closely, maintaining a visible presence to prevent further escalation.
