The Durban University of Technology (DUT) community has been left in shock after a male student died on Tuesday morning following a fall from the fifth floor of the Steve Biko campus in Durban.

DUT student death shocks campus

Police confirmed they are investigating the circumstances around the DUT student death, which has sparked debate on whether the incident was an act of suicide or if there were other factors involved.

According to eye-witnesses, the student was seen standing on the edge of the fifth floor before he waved a peace sign, smiled, and jumped. Students nearby initially thought he was joking, but moments later he fell to the ground and died instantly. A video taken by one of the students has since circulated on social media, further fuelling shock and grief across the campus.

Reports of NSFAS frustration

According to Sunday World, a student leader said the victim had recently been frustrated after being defunded by NSFAS— the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. NSFAS is a government programme that pays for tuition, accommodation, and allowances for qualifying students from low-income households.

Being “defunded” means that a student who was previously receiving financial aid is suddenly removed from the system, leaving them unable to pay for their studies.

In this case, the student leader explained that the problem started with a registration glitch earlier this year, which left a group of students — including the victim — unable to secure funding despite enrolling before the official closing date.

“We believe that his frustration stems from the fact that he was defunded because there was a registration glitch early this year and NSFAS could not accommodate the group that enrolled late,” the student leader told Sunday World.

DUT confirms incident and calls for calm

In an internal memo, DUT confirmed the student’s death and urged the university community to remain calm while police investigations continue.

“We are aware of reports already circulating on social media regarding this tragedy, and we humbly request that you remain respectful and not share unverified information. The South African Police Service was on campus in response to this tragic incident,” the university said.

The statement also expressed condolences:

“DUT is shocked and saddened by the loss of one of our students in Durban this morning [Tuesday]. We convey our condolences to the family, friends, and classmates of the young man who has passed away.”

The university added that counselling support would be made available to both students and staff affected by the tragedy.

Police are now investigating the exact circumstances of the DUT student death. At this stage, they have not confirmed whether the fall was intentional or if foul play is suspected. The student’s identity has not yet been released, as his family must first be informed.

For now, DUT has asked the campus community to respect the family’s privacy and avoid speculation until more details are officially confirmed.
