Residents in parts of Midrand woke up to a power outage on Thursday morning, 17 July 2025, as Eskom confirmed an electricity supply interruption due to emergency maintenance work.

Midrand power outage: Here’s what you must know

The scheduled outage began at 09:30 and is expected to last until 13:00.

The affected areas include Diepsloot Extensions 4 and 8, as well as Laezonia Agricultural Holdings.

Eskom says the interruption is necessary to carry out maintenance on the distribution network that supplies power to these areas.

While this particular outage was scheduled, other parts of Gauteng are dealing with unplanned electricity disruptions. Meadowlands Zone 1 is currently experiencing a blackout with no clear indication of when power will be restored.

According to Eskom, the cause of the outage in Meadowlands is still under investigation.

The utility has urged residents to treat all electrical outlets and appliances as live for safety reasons during the outage. This means users should avoid touching or attempting to fix any power-related infrastructure, even if it seems inactive. Eskom also advised that its restoration times could change if unexpected complications arise during the maintenance work.

Although maintenance is a routine part of ensuring the electricity network runs smoothly, Eskom’s frequent outages, both planned and unplanned, continue to cause frustration for many residents.

Power cuts, even for a few hours, disrupt daily routines — from cooking and heating to business operations and connectivity.

With both planned maintenance and ongoing issues like the Meadowlands outage, Gauteng residents continue to face uncertain power supply.

Many remain cautious, planning around possible disruptions in a province already familiar with frequent electricity issues.
