Lieutenant General Molefe Fani is set to appear before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee today as it continues probing allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
Fani’s testimony forms part of the committee’s ongoing inquiry, which was prompted by claims made by KwaZulu Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
According to News24, Fani was, in 2022, appointed as the South African Police Service’s divisional commissioner for supply chain management, following his tenure as acting chief procurement officer at National Treasury and as chief director for supply chain management.
His position places him at the centre of oversight over key procurement processes, an area directly implicated in several allegations before the committee.
The committee heard testimony in recent days from multiple witnesses, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s chief of staff, Cedrick Nkabinde, who alleged improper conduct by private investigator Paul O’Sullivan during proceedings.
Nkabinde’s evidence followed testimony from violence monitor Mary de Haas, whose statements generated widespread public attention.
Today’s session is expected to focus on Fani’s knowledge of, and response to, procurement related issues raised in earlier testimony.
The committee is examining whether systemic interference compromised SAPS operational integrity, including in supply chain divisions.
Fani was one of several appointments announced by national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola during an intervention briefing.
Masemola said the leadership changes were intended to strengthen operational structures within the service, adding:
“Lieutenant General Fani holds extensive experience in supply chain management and procurement”.
The Ad Hoc Committee continues to gather statements from officials, senior police management and other implicated parties as it prepares interim findings.
Fani’s appearance is scheduled to begin at 09:00 SAST.
