The South African Weather Service has issued a Level 9 orange alert for Gauteng, warning of severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall that may trigger flooding, infrastructure damage and major disruptions throughout the province.
According to News24, the alert affects large portions of Gauteng including Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Mogale City, Rand West, Lesedi, Emfuleni, Midvaal and Merafong.
Weather conditions are expected to remain unstable throughout Monday with gradual improvements from Tuesday.
SAWS forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela said continued heavy rainfall is likely to cause significant impact. This includes flooding of roads and residential areas as well as disruptions to essential services.
Thobela urged residents to exercise caution and stay indoors where possible.
