Kenny Kunene, deputy president of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), has been officially cleared of any wrongdoing in connection with murder-accused businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe.

Forensic report clears Kenny Kunene

A forensic report released on Monday, 22 September 2025, found that Kunene’s explanation for being at Molefe’s Sandton home during a police raid was truthful and backed by evidence.

The investigation was conducted by Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, one of South Africa’s top law firms, known for its independence and credibility. According to the report, Kunene was simply accompanying a young journalist who was seeking an interview with Molefe.

The raid by police, which led to Molefe’s arrest on charges linked to the 2022 murder of popular amapiano star DJ Sumbody (Oupa John Sefoka), happened while Kunene was present for this purpose.

The report stated:

“In as far as Mr Kunene’s version of the events that led to him being found in the premises of Mr Molefe on 21 July 2025, his version is corroborated by the interviews conducted with him, the journalist, and other witnesses.”

Importantly, the investigators also confirmed that no criminal charges or civil proceedings have been instituted against Kunene related to the incident.

This conclusion puts to rest months of speculation and political attacks that painted Kunene as being tied to Molefe’s alleged underworld dealings.

Kenny Kunene reacts to report findings

Kunene expressed relief on X (formerly Twitter) after the report was released. In a post, he wrote:

“Dust gets blown away by the wind and I remain unscathed. My name is God ordained. I was born for God’s purpose… My name is KENNY KUNENE and I am baaaaaaaack. Salute.”

The clearance follows a turbulent period for Kunene and the PA.

In July, party leader Gayton McKenzie suspended Kunene from all activities while the probe was underway. Kunene even resigned as a Johannesburg councillor to allow the process to run without political interference.

At a live briefing, McKenzie confirmed Kunene’s innocence, saying:

“The DP (Deputy President) is innocent. They investigated, they interviewed people — you’ll read for yourself. His story checks out.”

McKenzie also demanded Kunene’s reinstatement as MMC for Transport in Johannesburg, warning that if the ANC-led coalition in the city failed to act within seven days, the PA would pull out of coalition agreements nationally.

McKenzie framed the episode as a victory for transparency and accountability, noting that hiring a top law firm proved the party’s commitment to truth.

For Kunene, the outcome is both a personal and political victory. He has maintained from the start that his presence at Molefe’s home was coincidental and professional, not criminal. The forensic report now confirms that his account holds up under scrutiny.
