Juan Meyer, a controversial figure with a history of high-profile associations, is now at the forefront of the Africrypt cryptocurrency scandal.

Juan Meyer is at the centre of a crypto scam

Meyer, the CEO of Aurum Wealth and chairman of Umvuzo Lifestyle Creators, is one of the biggest investors affected by the collapse of Africrypt, a platform run by brothers Raees and Ameer Cajee.

Africrypt, which launched in 2019, promised investors massive returns on cryptocurrency trading but became one of South Africa’s largest financial scandals when billions disappeared overnight.

According to Meyer, he personally invested R177 million in the platform, making him one of its biggest clients.

Now, Meyer is on a mission to track down the Cajee brothers, stating that one is hiding in Dubai while the other remains in Switzerland with his passport confiscated.

“I am working with Interpol and Dubai and Swiss authorities to have the other brother arrested and both repatriated back to South Africa to face criminal charges,” Meyer told MyBroadband.

Despite the massive financial losses suffered by investors, South Africa’s financial authorities have limited jurisdiction over crypto assets, which were unregulated at the time Africrypt collapsed.

The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) has previously stated that the scheme exhibited signs of a Ponzi operation, with investors promised unrealistically high returns.

Meyer, a former business associate of notorious Czech crime boss Radovan Krejčíř, has found himself entangled in multiple controversies over the years.

In an unexpected twist, he has now taken the lead in trying to hold the Africrypt founders accountable.

How he was tied to the unsolved murder of Priscilla du Toit

Beyond his involvement in the Africrypt saga, Juan Meyer’s past raises even more questions.

He has previously been linked to the unsolved murder of fitness trainer Priscilla du Toit, a case that remains shrouded in mystery to this day.

Du Toit, a 41-year-old fitness guru, was found murdered in her Fourways home on 17 October 2019, three days after she was last seen alive.

Her battered body was discovered by neighbours, and investigators determined that she was killed on the night of 14 October.

In a chilling interview in 2019, Meyer identified himself as a person of interest in the murder case, making unsettling claims about the circumstances surrounding her death.

He admitted to knowing Du Toit personally and even suggested that he may have been one of the last people to see her alive.

The police investigation into her murder was severely compromised, with forensic evidence reportedly lost or tampered with.

Officers allegedly failed to collect key evidence, including Du Toit’s broken nails, which were later submitted by her family.

The crime scene was also cleaned multiple times before investigators returned, making it difficult to gather crucial forensic details.

What makes the case even murkier is the absence of any arrests or formal charges.

While multiple persons of interest were identified—including former partners and business associates—no clear suspect has ever been publicly named.

Meyer’s own involvement remains unclear, though his statements in 2019 raised suspicions about what he knew.

While Priscilla du Toit’s murder remains unsolved, Meyer continues to be a figure at the centre of some of South Africa’s most controversial cases.
