Isithembe school transport accident: Here’s the latest on the children
According to IPSS Medical Rescue, a team of medics quickly responded to the scene, where they found the vehicle had rolled over.
The children, who were on their way to school, suffered various injuries.
Emergency responders assessed the injured children and transported them to Sundumbili Clinic for further treatment and evaluation. Fortunately, most of the children sustained only minor injuries.
However, three children who were privately rushed to the clinic were found to have more serious injuries, including one child who was critically injured.
This child was subsequently transferred to a more suitable medical facility by IPSS Medical Advanced Life Support for specialised care.
This accident in Isithembe follows closely on the heels of a tragic transport incident in Carletonville, where a private scholar transport mini-bus carrying schoolchildren was involved in a devastating crash.
On 10 July 2024, a bakkie struck the mini-bus from behind, causing it to overturn and catch fire.
The accident, which occurred around 06:45, resulted in the deaths of 12 schoolchildren and their driver, with seven others hospitalized for urgent medical attention.
Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, expressed deep sorrow over the Carletonville incident, stating:
“The loss of our children is a devastating blow to our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured learners. We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and the entire school community.”
