MTV Base returned for another year to ruffle feathers with their Hottest MCs 2021 list and, as usual, social media was far from impressed.

Panelists raised the hairs of avid South African Hip-Hop fans when, on Thursday, during the first half of the two-part special, the ‘Bottom 5’ was unveiled.

Determining this year’s top-crop was DJ Zan D, Shala The Unicorn, Kai, Buhle, Siya and French Fry, a younger cohort than what we’ve become accustomed to.

Alas, MTV Base‘s Tshego Koke officiated proceedings, where a lot more than talent was considered in selecting the Hottest MCs 2021 list.

“This year’s Hottest MCs will be based on musicians who have managed to stay in the game, delivering the hottest songs and pushed the culture forward,” the channel explained in a statement.

Suffice it to say, the overarching objective of the show which is to spark heated debate online was achieved when the panel unveiled the ‘Bottom 5’ of the list, which included:

  4. Costa Titch
  5. K.O tied with Riky Rick
  6. 25K
  7. A-Reece
  8. Nasty C

“MTV Base has been at the vanguard of youth culture and, as an expert on African music, the Hottest MCs list usually ignites conversation and debate in the industry,” ViacomCBS Networks Africa’s Monde Twala said.
