The power disruption began early in the afternoon, leaving residents and businesses in the dark.

According to the national electricity supplier, preliminary investigations indicate that the fire broke out at the Athol substation, leading to the loss of electricity supply in Sandton and neighbouring areas.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, with Eskom’s technicians working diligently to determine the root cause and prevent future occurrences.

Eskom assured the public that efforts are underway to restore power as quickly as possible.

“Our technicians are on-site and working tirelessly to restore the electricity supply to the affected customers. However, at this stage, we are unable to provide an estimated time for the restoration of power,” he said.

The fire at the substation did not result in any injuries, which Mantshantsha noted as a positive outcome amidst the disruption.

“Fortunately, no injuries were sustained as a result of the fire,” the utility added.
