Eskom, South Africa’s primary electricity supplier, is facing operational challenges in the Esikhaleni, Mandlakala, and Dlangezwa areas due to recent threats from local residents.

These challenges have resulted in power disruptions and the inability of Eskom technicians to carry out essential repairs.
The Zircon and Cygnus substations, critical components of the local electrical infrastructure, have experienced tripping, leading to power outages in the affected areas.
Substations are vital in electrical generation, transmission, and distribution systems, transforming voltage levels as electricity travels from generating stations to consumers.
However, the ability of Eskom to address these issues has been hindered by threats from the local community.
Safety concerns have arisen, preventing Eskom technicians from entering the affected areas to conduct the necessary repairs. As a result, electricity supply disruptions persist, causing inconvenience for residents.
The Umhlathuze Municipality has stepped in to engage with the community in response to this situation.
Their primary objective is to establish a safe environment for Eskom technicians to carry out the required repairs.
Once safety is assured, Eskom will be able to access the affected areas and work on restoring the power supply.
“Customers are urged to treat all installations as live,” Eskom warned.
