The Global One financial service provider experienced an untimely outage on Friday afternoon, and while no statement has surfaced on the cause, users reported issues with accessing the mobile app, online banking, and performing transfers.
According to tracking data collected by Down Detector, early reports of the Capitec Bank app outage first surfaced at approximately 13:32, with the highest volume of alerts recorded shortly after 14:00.
When this article was published, the only word coming from Capitec was through its social media team, which exacerbated the furore with its generic response to queries, which read:
“We are experiencing intermittent issues with our App. We apologise for the inconvenience caused. Our IT team is working hard to resolve the matter speedily.
Capitec’s latest system breakdown comes a mere month after the bank reported similar issues. At the time, users were locked out of their accounts and unable to transact on mobile banking. Coincidentally, the previous app outage occurred toward the end of the month, around payday.
This is the fourth Capitec outage in 2023.
Prior to September’s incident, the bank’s users were left in the dark when, in the wee hours of ‘Pay Day’, on Tuesday, 25 April 2023, the banking app falsely reported insufficient funds.
At the time, Capitec clients could not view their bank balances and, even worse, some users whose salaries were paid to their accounts on the day could not access their funds due to the zero balance error.
A month before that, on 24 March 2023, similar issues persisted.
