On Election Day, residents in Bosmant and Newclare experienced unexpected power outages, prompting immediate action from City Power.
City Power provides update on Bosmant and Newclare outages
In a statement, City Power confirmed that the Hursthill Service Delivery Centre (SDC) reported a total of 110 open calls related to power issues, with 51 plants out of service.
City Power dispatched operators to address the outages in Bosmant, Newclare, and surrounding areas.
Additional outages were also reported in Dunkeld, Craighall, and Pennyville, where teams were sent to investigate and resolve the issues.
City Power assured residents that they were working diligently to restore electricity and minimise disruptions.
“Further details will be provided in subsequent reports,” the utility noted.
Loadshedding not imminent, Electricity Minister insists
These outages come after Electricity Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa dismissed reports of imminent loadshedding.
The minister stressed that the current outages were not related to loadshedding but were isolated incidents being promptly addressed by City Power.
The Minister attributed the improved power stability to increased planned maintenance and a reduction in breakdowns across Eskom’s fleet.
This maintenance strategy, initiated in March 2023, has, according to the minister, significantly reduced the reliance on diesel-powered Open-Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGTs).
Ramokgopa criticised the reports of impending loadshedding as “factually incorrect and an ill-guided political ploy” intended to mislead the public during the critical election period.
“The Ministry remains confident that the efforts we have led over the past 12 months, supported by Eskom employees and its leadership team, will continue to place the country on a firm foundation of energy security,” stated Dr Ramokgopa.
