The official trailer for Superman, directed by James Gunn, has officially been released, offering the first extended look at the film that will launch the new DC Universe (DCU) under Chapter One: Gods & Monsters.
Watch: DC Studios releases ‘Superman’ official trailer
The trailer, released on Wednesday, 14 May 2025, builds on the teaser that dropped in December 2024.
It confirms a number of plot points and character reveals while setting the tone of a film that balances emotional stakes with blockbuster action and satirical humour.
At the centre of the trailer is the debut chemistry between David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The trailer opens with a moment of levity between the two, where Lois jokes about interviewing Clark as Superman, foreshadowing a more romantic and grounded narrative element.
What to expect from James Gunn’s version of the ‘Superman’ origin
James Gunn’s version of Superman moves away from a traditional origin story and instead explores a Superman who is already active, but struggling to navigate public opinion and government scrutiny.
The film touches on similar themes as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, where Superman’s role as an unregulated hero raises concerns among world governments.
In the trailer, Lois Lane mentions that the Secretary of Defence is beginning to investigate Superman’s activities—particularly his ability to intervene globally without oversight.
The trailer reveals that Rick Flag Sr., previously introduced in Creature Commandos, is now Secretary of Defence and leading the oversight initiative. His involvement signals deeper political undercurrents, with characters like Ultraman and The Engineer appearing to work alongside him.
These figures are seen arresting Superman, suggesting internal conflict within the government itself.
Three major villains emerge from the trailer: Ultraman, The Engineer, and an original new threat called the Hammer of Boravia—a towering golden robot that resembles Superman in power.
It’s heavily implied this machine was created by Lex Luthor. In his first speaking appearance, Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor expresses deep resentment towards Superman, saying:
“He isn’t a man. He’s an it that has somehow become the focal point of the entire world’s conversation. I will not accept that.”
There are also hints of a new superhero team. Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and Guy Gardner are shown flying over Metropolis in matching uniforms, likely forming the DCU’s Justice League International under Maxwell Lord.
As expected from Gunn, the trailer features moments of sharp humour. In one scene, a woman casually takes a selfie with the Hammer of Boravia destroying a building behind her—an example of the satirical edge woven into the high-stakes action.
When is ‘Superman’ movie release date?
Superman is set for release worldwide in cinemas and IMAX on 11 July 2025. DC Studios has confirmed the film will be exclusive to theatres, with no simultaneous digital or streaming debut.
