Warner Bros. has released the official trailer for Mortal Kombat II, giving fans a first look at the highly anticipated sequel.
‘Mortal Kombat II’ trailer is out: Here’s what it teases
The trailer debuted during a live fan event, where viewers participated in a character-reveal game before the footage aired. The biggest surprise was the reveal of Noob Saibot, the undead version of Sub-Zero, confirming his role in the film.
The trailer suggests that the sequel will shift focus to the character Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, known for his past roles in action-heavy films.
Unlike the first movie, which introduced original character Cole Young, the sequel promises to dive straight into the tournament that defines the Mortal Kombat universe.
Fight scenes teased in the trailer show characters engaging in intense, stylised combat, including a striking move from Scorpion at the end.
‘Mortal Kombat II’ cast and plot
Mortal Kombat II continues the story from the first film and will feature the actual Mortal Kombat tournament—a deadly competition between Earthrealm and Outworld. If Earth loses, its world will be taken over by Shao Kahn, played by Martyn Ford.
Karl Urban plays Johnny Cage, a cocky movie star turned fighter. His addition brings a mix of comic relief and strong fighting skills to Earthrealm’s team.
New characters include Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Jade (Tati Gabrielle), Baraka (CJ Bloomfield), Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen), Jerrod (Desmond Chiam), and the dark sorcerer Quan Chi (Damon Herriman).
These characters are known from the video games for their connections to Outworld’s royal family and magic.
Returning characters from the first film include:
- Lewis Tan as Cole Young
- Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade
- Mehcad Brooks as Jax
- Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion
- Joe Taslim likely as Noob Saibot
- Tadanobu Asano as Raiden
- Ludi Lin as Liu Kang
- Chin Han as Shang Tsung
- Max Huang as Kung Lao
- Josh Lawson as Kano
The story focuses on Earthrealm’s warriors preparing to fight in the official tournament, after stopping an earlier cheating attempt by Outworld.
This time, the outcome will be tracked on a scoreboard, with visible wins and losses. The trailer and cast list suggest the movie will include high-stakes battles, betrayals, and supernatural twists—including possible character resurrections linked to Quan Chi.
Director Simon McQuoid has promised a larger-scale story with intense action and world-building that remains faithful to the Mortal Kombat video game series.
The film will balance brutal “fatalities” with character development.
When is ‘Mortal Kombat II’ release date?
Mortal Kombat II is set to be released on 24 October 2025. The release is expected to be global and marks a return to theatres for fans who enjoyed the 2021 film.
The sequel aims to improve upon the original by delivering more of the tournament action fans expect, while continuing the storyline that began with Cole Young and the Earthrealm fighters.
