The internet is buzzing with claims that Jonathan Majors ‘Doomsday’ rumours may be true, as the actor could appear in Avengers: Doomsday.

Rumours of Jonathan Majors’ return

Nothing has been officially confirmed by Marvel or Disney, but speculation spread after Disney’s Marketing Expo in Shanghai showcased a light show promo featuring Doctor Doom killing Thanos.

Some fans on X (formerly Twitter) debated whether the sequence hinted at Kang’s erasure from Marvel history, leading to whispers that Majors might still make a cameo.

Why Jonathan Majors was dropped from Marvel

Majors was once positioned as the central villain of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga.

He played multiple versions of Kang, including He Who Remains in Loki and Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Marvel had originally titled the fifth Avengers film The Kang Dynasty with him as the lead villain.

However, in December 2023, Majors was convicted of misdemeanour assault in a high-profile case.

Disney cut ties soon after, rewriting its film slate. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was cancelled and replaced with Avengers: Doomsday, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to play Doctor Doom.

Majors’ reputation took another turn in 2024 when Grace Jabbari, his ex-girlfriend, withdrew her defamation lawsuit against him, ending that legal chapter. This, along with public calls for “redemption arcs” in Hollywood, has helped fuel talk of a possible return.

Why his comeback in ‘Doomsday’ would make sense

Even if Majors only appears briefly, it would fit the larger story. Here’s why:

  1. Unfinished Kang storyline – The Marvel films introduced the idea of a “Council of Kangs” in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, leaving fans wondering what happened to the variants. A cameo could close that plot hole.
  2. Doctor Doom’s rise – In the comics (Secret Wars and Doomed 2099), Doom defeats Kang and other powerful beings. Showing Doom wiping out Kang variants on screen would highlight his dominance.
  3. Continuity – Cutting Kang entirely would confuse audiences after years of setup. A flashback or short scene with Majors would allow Marvel to “retire” the character without ignoring his importance.

What fans can expect from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

The film, directed by the Russo brothers, will bring together an enormous cast including the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Thunderbolts. Doctor Doom will take centre stage as the new villain, with a storyline inspired by Secret Wars.

Fans already got a taste of this at the Shanghai Expo where the promo recreated the moment Doom kills Thanos.

If Doom can take down Thanos, showing him defeating Kang too would cement his role as the most dangerous villain in Marvel history.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to release in US theatres on 18 December 2026.
