The Limpopo music scene has been shaken by news that Kharishma, one of the province’s most promising young artists, is in critical condition following a deadly car accident in Polokwane early on Friday morning.

According to reports, the 20-year-old singer, whose real name is Melita Mogale, was involved in a serious collision at around 04:00 SAST at the intersection of Grobler and Magazyn streets.

The crash, which occurred near PEMPS Primary School, left one person dead at the scene. Kharishma and another passenger were rushed to hospital with severe injuries, where she remains under intensive care.

Police have yet to release a full report on what caused the accident. Early accounts suggest that the vehicle in which the artist was travelling collided with another car, though investigations are still ongoing.

Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward as they try to piece together the events leading up to the crash.

Representatives from the Limpopo Artists Movement (LAM) have been visiting the hospital, offering support to the family.

LAM chairperson Mphoza Mashabela, who described Kharishma as being “like a daughter,” said the accident has devastated the local creative community.

“We are all heartbroken and praying for her recovery,” Mashabela said, adding that Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba has also sent messages of support and sympathy to the young artist’s family.

Kharishma rose to fame in recent years as one of the leading voices in Lekompo music, a Limpopo-born genre that combines traditional rhythms with contemporary sound.

Her breakout song Inama cemented her place in the province’s vibrant music scene, where she has become known for her energetic performances and deep connection to her audience.

Fans have flooded social media with prayers and messages of encouragement, using hashtags such as #PrayForKharishma and #GetWellSoonKharishma.

Many have expressed their sadness over the tragedy, particularly because this is not her first road accident. In August 2024, Kharishma survived another crash near Ga-Kgwete in Sekhukhune after performing at a show.

She sustained minor injuries in that incident and later reassured her followers that she had recovered.

LAM has asked the public to give the family privacy during this difficult time while they focus on her recovery.
