Podcast host Macgyver “MacG” Mukwevho has publicly apologised and extended an invitation to television personality Minnie Dlamini to appear on his show, following intense backlash over comments he made about her personal hygiene during a recent episode of Podcast and Chill.
MacG issues olive branch to Minnie Dlamini
The controversy began when MacG speculated on Dlamini’s separation from Dr Brian Monaisa, suggesting without evidence that she may have issues with her hygiene.
“Why can’t she keep a man? There’s got to be something wrong with her, maybe her coochie smells or something,” MacG said in the episode.
He added, “It happens, man, especially with the hot girls.”
The remark sparked outrage from the public and was widely condemned for being degrading and disrespectful, particularly in a country grappling with high levels of gender-based violence and femicide.
Deputy Minister Mmapaseka Steve Letsike called for MacG to be summoned to Parliament, describing the comment as inappropriate and harmful. However, the Portfolio Committee on Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities ultimately rejected the request, with some members accusing the deputy minister of seeking publicity.
In the latest episode of his podcast, MacG acknowledged the backlash.
“We took podcasting to another level; we’re now honourable speakers,” he joked, referencing the parliamentary attention.
He continued, “Is it even a podcast if you haven’t been summoned by Parliament?”
At one point, MacG expressed that the negative reaction sometimes makes him want to quit the show entirely.
“Sometimes I feel like ah, f*** this s*** man, let me pack my bags and go back to Venda to start farming, I don’t need this shit,” he said.
Despite this, he noted that support from fans motivates him to continue.
He then addressed the criticism directly.
“I want to apologise first and foremost to all the female chillers and just women in general in South Africa that I might have offended with that comment, that was not the intention. You know, we never say things to offend people.”
In an attempt to mend relations, MacG extended an invitation to Dlamini to join the podcast as a guest.
“This thing started on the podcast, let’s end it on the podcast. She said some things, I’ve said some things, let’s squash it once and for all, bro,” he said.
Minnie Dlamini remains mum amid backlash
Dlamini has not responded publicly to MacG’s latest comments.
However, her past statements suggest she disapproves of the podcast’s treatment of women.
In 2021, following another controversial episode featuring MacG and musician Jub Jub, which triggered Amanda du Pont’s fiery response, Dlamini tweeted:
“The Mac G and Jub Jub podcast is the most degrading piece of content I wish I never consumed. I couldn’t even finish it! You guys should be ashamed of yourselves. Women can’t be spoken about like this and it’s condoned?! Do better!!!”
As of now, there has been no indication from Dlamini or her team regarding whether she will accept MacG’s invitation.
