Gogo Maweni, real name Makhotso Lee-Anne Mofokeng, will stand trial after the Protea Magistrate’s Court dismissed her bid to have the case thrown out.
Gogo Maweni trial date set
The well-known sangoma and reality TV star appeared in court, where her bail was extended, and the matter was postponed for trial.
Maweni is facing a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in connection with an alleged incident that took place in December 2024. The state claims that she attacked the complainant with a bottle during a heated altercation.
During court proceedings, it was revealed that Maweni is expecting twins, a detail she disclosed in her affidavit as part of her bail application.
Her legal team argued that her pregnancy, along with her voluntary surrender to the police, demonstrated that she was not a flight risk.
However, the prosecutor opposed her attempt to avoid trial, highlighting that Maweni has four previous convictions dating back to 2015, suggesting a potential pattern of violent behaviour. Despite these concerns, the court allowed her to remain out on bail while awaiting trial.
Maweni’s supporters gathered outside the courthouse, cheering and celebrating her release. Videos of the moment she exited the courtroom have since gone viral online.
The trial date has been set for 16 March 2025, where she will formally answer to the charges.
