Dr SD Gumbi biography

Dr SD Gumbi, born in Standerton, Mpumalanga, was widely respected as a pastor, evangelist, motivational speaker, and gospel music producer.

He became a Christian on 10 January 1959 and began preaching in the Assemblies of God church. Over decades, he became a powerful voice in the South African religious landscape.

His messages often included biblical interpretation using everyday language and humour, which helped him reach people of all ages.

One of his most iconic phrases was “U-Amen Usekhona?” – a line that became synonymous with his ministry.

Dr Gumbi was also a sought-after public speaker at churches, conferences, universities, and companies.

He travelled internationally to preach, earning honorary doctorates for his religious contributions.

In 1984, he founded the S.O.S Choir, whose debut gospel album Hamba Mzalwane achieved platinum status. He also released music under the Higher Dimensions Music label, including the well-known CD Amehlo Ami Avulekile.

His ministry reached beyond sermons. During political violence in 1984 between local factions in Standerton, Dr Gumbi played a role in mediating peace and was the only pastor who conducted funerals for those who died during the conflict. In 1999, he began the Lekwa Revival, which later evolved into the 2007 Spiritual Feast.

Dr Gumbi was a member of the Executive of the Assemblies of God and was active in the Body of Christ Interdenominational World, where he mentored young ministers.

His work left a strong impression locally and internationally, placing Standerton and Lekwa municipality on the global religious map.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (née Mangubeni), and their three children: Nomsa, Sibusiso, and Sibongile.
