Radio and television personality Anele Mdoda went viral after she shared a distressing account of an alleged incident involving an Uber driver in Cape Town.

The 947 Breakfast Club host claimed that the driver became aggressive and threatening after she selected the “don’t talk to me” option during her ride.

According to her now-deleted social media posts, the driver allegedly made a disturbing comment about rape and continued to harass her until she reached her destination.

Mdoda, who was visibly shaken by the experience, stated that she was taking legal action.

“I am going to press charges today. X won’t make sure that man does not threaten another woman again. The law will,” she wrote.

The incident has sparked widespread concern and discussions on social media about rider safety, particularly for women using e-hailing services.

Many users have expressed their support for Mdoda and called for stricter regulations on driver vetting processes.

Is Uber Safe in Cape Town?

Uber South Africa has responded to the allegations, stating that the company is urgently investigating the matter. In a statement, an Uber spokesperson stressed that safety remains a top priority.

“What has been described is completely unacceptable and we have zero tolerance for this behaviour. We are immediately and urgently looking into this matter. Where a driver is found to be in breach of our community guidelines, their access to the platform is immediately removed,” the statement read.

Uber also emphasised its commitment to improving safety features, including in-app emergency buttons, RideCheck, and audio recording capabilities.

However, safety concerns persist, as Mdoda’s experience is not an isolated case.

Another Uber user in Cape Town recently shared an incident involving an Uber driver allegedly stealing their laptop bag during an UberCollect trip.

The user managed to recover their belongings after what they described as an “extortion” situation.

While the company has introduced several safety features, some riders remain concerned about enforcement and accountability when safety breaches occur.

Mdoda’s case remains under investigation, and Uber has pledged to take immediate action if the driver is found guilty of misconduct.
