Changan has made its official debut in South Africa with a high-profile launch event at Sun City’s Superbowl this past weekend, drawing the attention of over 300 guests, including industry leaders, media, and government officials.
The Chinese carmaker used the occasion to introduce its range of vehicles to the local market, marking a major step in its expansion into Africa.
According to Bizcommunity and Changan Motors South Africa, the automaker, distributed locally through Jameel Motors South Africa, has opened its flagship showroom in Pretoria as part of its 25-dealership network across the country.
This expansion aims to provide buyers with accessibility for sales, servicing, and parts.
Founded in 1862, Changan is among China’s “big four” car manufacturers, with 14 manufacturing bases and 34 plants globally.
The company has been producing vehicles since 1959 and previously sold cars in South Africa under the name Chana between 2007 and 2013.
Its return comes at a time when the local market is increasingly receptive to affordable vehicles that combine technology with reliability.
At the Sun City launch, Changan showcased several models including the Alsvin sedan, CS75 Pro SUV, Deepal S07 electric vehicle, and the Hunter bakkie — a highlight of the event.
The Hunter REEV (Range Extending Electric Vehicle) is described as the world’s first bakkie using a petrol engine as a generator to charge a battery that powers the electric motor.
It combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors and a 31.2 kWh battery pack, offering 200 kW of power, 470 Nm of torque, and up to 1,000 km in total range when using both electric and petrol power sources .
For buyers less familiar with hybrid or electric setups, the Hunter will also be available in a diesel version.
Other models include upcoming additions such as the Changan Uni-S and Deepal S05 REEV, both scheduled to reach South African showrooms in 2026.
“Changan is not entering South Africa as just another name in the market. We’re here to set a new standard where quality, technology, and reliability meet real value,” Marinus Venter, Country General Manager of Jameel Motors South Africa, said.
Xiao Feng, General Manager for Changan Automobile Middle East and Africa, added:
“The future of mobility belongs to those who dare to imagine, who innovate, and who collaborate.”
Changan’s aftersales programme includes maintenance plans, extended warranties, 24-hour roadside assistance, and access to its dealer network. This support aims to enhance buyer confidence and service standards.
Government representatives, including City of Tshwane Governance and Support Officer Musa Khumalo and Deputy Director Phindile Jonas, attended the launch.
Khumalo noted that hosting Changan’s first flagship dealership in Tshwane was a reflection of confidence in the city’s infrastructure and automotive potential.
With its mixture of internal combustion, hybrid, and electric options, Changan aims to appeal to a wide range of South African drivers — from everyday commuters to off-road enthusiasts — and to compete with established brands in the SUV and bakkie market through a focus on innovation, affordability, and comprehensive service support.
