The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) published the latest update on COVID-19 new cases per province in the 24 hours preceding Friday 3 December 2021.
COVID-19 new cases per province
The NICD, a division of the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), collected a sample of 65 990 COVID-19 tests, of which 16 055 returned a positive.
This represents a 24.3% positivity rate. Furthermore, 25 COVID-19-related deaths were recorded in the 24-hour reporting period, bringing total casualties to 89 944.
Set against total infections which, on Wednesday, amounted to 3 004 203, from 19 646 423 tests, the COVID-19 death rate in South Africa stands at 2.99%.
According to analysis made by the NICD, provinces with a spike in COVID-19 cases are Gauteng, the Western Cape, Mpumalanga, North West and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

Update on COVID vaccinations per province
In the past 24 hours, here has been an increase of 279 hospital admissions, bringing the total number of patients currently admitted to 3 202, 50.5% of which are in private healthcare centres.
With regards to the national vaccination program, a total of 147 147 doses were administered in the last 24 hours. This is based on data recorded at 17:00 on Friday 3 December 2021.
