Speaking ahead of the match, Springbok centre Damian de Allende, who plays club rugby in Japan, said he is excited to face familiar faces from his Panasonic Wild Knights side.

“Japan holds a special place in my heart,” he said.

“I’ve spent a few seasons there, and it’ll be special to go up against teammates I know so well.”

Teammate Jesse Kriel said the team expects a physical contest from the Brave Blossoms.

“They have a different dynamic — fast, well-organised, and disciplined,” Kriel noted.

“We need to set the tone for the rest of our tour with a high standard of rugby from the start.”

Springboks vs Japan score prediction

The last time the two sides met was at the 2019 Rugby World Cup, where South Africa won 26–3 in Tokyo during the quarterfinals.

Earlier that same year, the Springboks defeated Japan 41–7 in a warm-up match in Kumagaya.

However, Japan famously shocked the world with their 34–32 victory over South Africa in Brighton during the 2015 World Cup, a result that still serves as a reminder that no team can be taken lightly.

The Springboks are clear favourites given their depth, experience, and recent form, but Japan’s quick tempo and offloading game could make for a competitive first half. Expect South Africa to pull away in the second period, with the score predicted at:

South Africa 38 – Japan 13.
