Police in Cape Town have launched an investigation following the suspected drowning of an elderly couple at the Cape Royal Yacht Club early Tuesday morning.

What police have revealed so far

The victims, believed to be Polish nationals in their seventies, were discovered by police divers shortly after 08:15 in the waters of Table Bay Harbour.

According to a police statement, there is currently no suspicion of foul play.

However, an inquest docket has been opened by the Table Bay Harbour police to determine what led to the tragic incident. A post-mortem examination will be carried out to confirm the exact cause of death, though early indications suggest the couple drowned.

“The bodies of a man and a woman were recovered from the harbour water by police divers. The identities of the deceased are being withheld until their next of kin have been notified,” a police spokesperson said.

Authorities are calling on the public to assist in the investigation.

As of publication, the Cape Royal Yacht Club has not responded to requests for comment regarding the incident.

The Cape Royal Yacht Club is a well-known private club situated in Cape Town’s busy Table Bay Harbour. It attracts a range of visitors, from local sailing enthusiasts and international tourists to high-net-worth individuals and seasonal yacht owners.

While generally known as a tranquil and secure location, the club’s open access to the water and surrounding marina means safety protocols are essential, especially for elderly guests.

The incident has cast a sombre tone over the area, with police continuing their efforts to piece together the sequence of events.

The investigation will also look into whether the couple were staying at the marina, visiting the club, or connected to a yacht moored nearby.

More details are expected once the post-mortem results are made public and formal identification has been completed.

In the meantime, the case remains under investigation, with police urging anyone who might have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area on Tuesday morning to come forward.
