Dashcam footage exposes alleged Midvaal truck hijacking suspects
In the footage, individuals can be seen inside the cab of the truck, shortly after the reported hijacking incident.
The vehicle was reportedly branded with the insignia of Matase Industrial Solutions. Albeit, official confirmation regarding the ownership of the truck had not been received from the company at the time of publishing.
Similarly, Gauteng SAPS had not yet responded to our request for comment when this report was compiled.
This incident occurs in the wake of recent breakthroughs in April 2025, when law enforcement teams arrested five individuals aged between 50 and 69 in Sebenza, Ekurhuleni.
The suspects had hijacked a truck transporting solar batteries valued at approximately R5 million. The operation, which took place on Modderfontein Road, led to the rescue of the driver and recovery of the stolen vehicle.
What drew widespread concern at the time was the revelation that two of the suspects were wearing uniforms of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, while two others had donned South African Police Service (SAPS) reflector jackets.
According to police reports, the April sting was the result of a collaborative intelligence effort between SAPS Tactical Response Team, Anti-Gang Unit, DPCI Gauteng Tracking Team, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations and Tracker Connect.
Two vehicles used in the crime—a Hyundai Accent and a Hyundai iX35—were seized during the arrests.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni remarked at the time:
“This is a great breakthrough as it might help us to solve other cases of truck hijackings, especially where the suspects are posing as police officers.”
Authorities confirmed the arrested suspects would undergo profiling to determine links to other serious and violent crimes.
The investigation into how the suspects obtained police uniforms was also ongoing.
